The highly advanced 9000rpm F458 is an aspirated 4.5-litre V8 with a brand new double-clutch, seven-speed gearbox.
The 458 harks back to the typical Ferrari naming system of its capacity and number of cylinders — it’s a 4.5-litre V8. But the really important bit its what comes next — Italia is the car Ferrari hopes will be the new pride of Italy.
The F458 is set to change the perception that R8 and Gallardo could be better than a Ferrari rival and the newcomer is much more than simply a refreshed F430. A new engine, chassis and ultra-modern suspension technology as well as the use of exotic magnesium and carbon fibre all contribute keeping its weight down.
Designed by Pininfarina, the new car looks absolutely stunning following a series of so-so looking recent Ferraris with fresh new looks and LED tech headlights in an ultra-slick new body with hugely reduced aerodynamic drag to improve Italia’s performance on track and at the petrol pump.
A series of underbody aerodynamic venturi tunnels have the effect of sucking the car down onto the tarmac like an F1 car to create 140kg of downforce at 200km/h. Two movable wings are also hidden at the front radiator air intakes as part of the car’s active aerodynamic package to reduce drag at high speeds.
Boasting Ferrari’s “e-diff” limited slip differential and adjustable F1-Trac traction control system and stopped by by lightweight carbon ceramic brakes, Italia is said to be the quickest car Ferrari has ever built.
